Warren Glen Downs Jr. passed away at home, surrounded by his family, on September 7, 2026. He was born on August 1, 1947, to Warren Glen Downs Sr. and Leaine Love in Greenwood, Mississippi. He attended elementary schools in Greenville, Mississippi, and several communities in California. Because his father served in the Air Force, Warren had the memorable opportunity to graduate from high school in Misawa, Japan, in 1965. He received his teaching credential from Stanislaus State in 1972.
Warren met his future wife, Peggy, while “cruising the drag” in Merced in 1967. They married in Yosemite National Park in 1972, choosing one of their favorite places for the occasion. Together, they spent many wonderful hours walking along the Merced River and driving to Glacier Point.
Warren held several teaching positions with Visalia Unified, including roles at Bob Wiley Correctional Center and Independent Study. He finished his career at El Diamante High School in 2010. A dedicated teacher, he always went the extra mile to ensure that his students enjoyed his classes while learning the subject matter.
Warren loved to learn and was always eager to try something new. He took juggling and art classes, learnedbody-shop skills to help his older son, and studied Spanish. He attended many workshops to improve his teaching and coaching skills and never shied away from a new challenge.
In his spare time, Warren enjoyed watching sports and politics—much to his wife’s dismay—and spending quality time with his grandchildren. Until very recently, he worked out seven days a week with a close group of friends. His favorite activity was coaching his sons in soccer and baseball. From 1996 to 2001, he coached the Visalia Vipers, traveling throughout the state.
Warren is survived by his wife of 54 years, Peggy (Margaret); his sons, Michael (Bailey) and Matthew (Jess); and his six wonderful grandchildren, Michael Jr., Blake, Caroline, Kathryn, Makenna, and Declan. His extended family includes three sisters-in-law and five brothers-in-law, all of whom considered him a brother by blood.
A Celebration of Life will be scheduled at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society. Memorial tributes and condolences may be offered at www.smithfamilychapel.com.
