Richard Carl Jacobsen died on June 9th after a brief illness. He was 95.
Dick, as he was known to family and friends, was born on March 14, 1929 in Lancaster, California to Carl and Mary Jacobsen. He was preceded in death by his two older sisters, Virginia Wheeler and Marjorie Hulsizer. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Patricia Jacobsen, son Richard Jacobsen, Jr., daughter-in-law Margaret Jacobsen, and grandsons James Jacobsen, John Jacobsen, Matthew Jacobsen and Thomas Jacobsen. He was preceded in death by his daughter Ann Jacobsen
Mr. Jacobsen grew up in Lancaster and was a multi-sport athlete at Antelope Valley High School. He attended Drake University on a football scholarship. Following graduation in 1952, he served in the Marine Corps as an infantry officer. After leaving active duty, he was hired in 1956 by Mt.Whitney High School as head football coach and subsequently became the head football coach at College of Sequoias, where he also served as head golf coach. It was during this period that he met Patricia Pogue. Dick and Pat married in 1958 and settled in Exeter after briefly living in Visalia. Dick earned a master’s degree in education from theUniversity of Southern California and moved from coaching into administration at College of Sequoias, eventually becoming Vice President of Business. Following retirement from COS in 1984, Mr. Jacobsen worked alongside Pat managing Rocky Hill, Inc., a family-owned ranching company. During this time, he served on numerous agricultural boards of directors including Sunkist Growers, Inc. Fruit Growers Supply Company, Exeter Ivanhoe Citrus Association, Kaweah& St. Johns Rivers Association and Lemon Cove DitchCompany. Dick especially enjoyed spending time with his grandsons. He was adored by his family and will be dearly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
A private memorial service with only close family present will be held in the coming months. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Kaweah Health Foundation.
